Hall of Fame trainer Frank “Pancho” Martin is still making trips to the winner’s circle at the age of 85.
Martin, who was inducted into the National Musuem of Racing’s Hall of Fame in 1981, sent out his first winner of 2011 when Good Karma prevailed in the first race at Aqueduct on Thursday. For Martin, it was the 3,296th victory in a career that dates back to 1941.
Martin was the nation’s leading money-winning trainer in 1974 and led all New York conditioners in wins from 1973-82. Martin is best known as the trainer of champions Autobiography and Outstandingly, as well as Sham, the runner-up to Secretariat in the 1973 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.
