Al Carter, the historian at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, recently tracked down the whereabouts of the nine living Hall of Fame Thoroughbreds. Here is what he found:
Two Hall of Famers are currently residing on the Japanese island of Hokkaido. Azeri, a 2010 Hall of Fame inductee, was sold for $2.25 million to Northern Farm in Hokkaido, while 2007 inductee Silver Charm is performing stud duty at the JBBA Ibur Stallion Station in southern Hokkaido. According to an October 2010 report on Bloodhorse.com, Silver Charm is “leading a pampered life,” and will return to Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Ky., when his stud days are through.
The oldest living Hall of Fame horse is 1994 inductee Flatterer, who turned 32 this year. The four-time Eclipse Award winner for Outstanding Steeplechase Horse is residing at the My Way Farm of his owner, William Pape, in Unionville, Pa.
“He is still looking well and acts like a real champion,” Pape said.
Cigar, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2002, resides at the Kentucky Horse Park’s Hall of Champions in Lexington, where he receives thousands of visitors each year.
Serena’s Song, also a member of the class of 2002, is a successful broodmare at Donali Stud near Paris, Ky. She has already produced stakes winners Serena’s Tune, Sophisticat (in France, Ireland and England), Grand Reward, Harlintgton, and Schransberg. In 2010, she produced a Street Cry filly and in 2011 she will be bred to Unbridled Song.
A.P. Indy, who was inducted into the Hall in 2000, is standing at Lane’s End in Versailles, Ky., and is one of the most successful sires in the United States. Among his get are Pulpit, Bernardini, Rags to Riches, and Golden Missile.
Another Hall of Famer who has developed into a popular sire is Tiznow, a 2009 Hall inductee. He is at WinStar Farm in Versailles, Ky. Among his progeny are Well Armed, Colonel John, Da’ Tara, and Bear Now.
Class of 2010 member Point Given is a stallion at Three Chimneys. Among his progeny are Sealy Hill, Points of Grace, and Point Determined.
Silverbulletday, a 2009 Hall inductee, is a broodmare at Hill N Dale Farm in Lexington. Thus far she has been unable to transfer her remarkable talent to her offspring. Of her eight foals, only one, Tice, by A.P. Indy, has made it to the track. In 2010, she gave birth to a filly by Midnight Lute.
